Scan Tool Update Subscriptions Explained: What Happens After Year One
Free update periods, renewal costs, and what stops working when a subscription lapses.
Almost every bidirectional scanner ships with a period of free software updates, and after that it’s a renewal fee. Before you compare sticker prices, compare what the tool costs over three years.
What updates actually bring
- New model years and new modules
- New or expanded functions (more relearns, coding, adaptations)
- Bug fixes, which matter for things like code formats that change (see IQA coding)
What happens if you don’t renew
Policies differ by brand and model, so read the fine print. Generally:
- The tool usually keeps working with the software it had.
- You don’t get new vehicles or functions.
- Online-dependent features can stop. One example is FCA secure gateway access: Autel states a valid software subscription is required for AutoAuth access on its tablets (Autel).
Questions to ask before buying
- How long are updates free (1 year, 2 years, lifetime)?
- What does a renewal cost, and is it per year?
- Does gateway or online coding access depend on an active subscription?
- Can you renew later after a lapse, and at what price?
- Is “lifetime free updates” limited to some makes or functions?
Add the hidden costs
- AutoAuth for FCA/Nissan/Mercedes gateway access, an annual fee per brand (AutoAuth pricing)
- Per-VIN or annual tokens for some VW/Audi gateway access (Autel)
- OEM programming subscriptions if you do module flashing
We’re adding verified price and renewal info to each tool page. Until a number is sourced, it says “being verified.”
